Founded
in 1903 by Reginald Warner to specialize in historic replicas,
the Gainsborough Silk Weaving Company soon had over 50
looms in weavers’ cottages all over Suffolk. They
then moved to the purpose built mill in Sudbury, where
Gainsborough operates today.
The mill’s pioneering work soon attracted
a discerning clientele and in 1912 Gainsborough received
its first royal commission. In 1980 the company received
the Royal Warrant, and its fabrics now hang in most royal
palaces and houses, as well as the House of Parliament
and other significant buildings.
In the 21st century Gainsborough’s
commitment to preserving these traditions and values is
stronger than ever. Every stage of design and production
is undertaken in house at the mill in Sudbury, and runs
can be as small as 20 metres – which can make Gainsborough
very relevant in a small market like New Zealand.
Another specialty is reconstructing original
designs from original fragments .
Gainsborough fabrics are available through
selected interior designers and
retailers throughout New Zealand.
